What Is an Apostille?
An apostille is a certificate issued by the government to authenticate public documents for international use. The apostille is recognized by the 124 countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention, which Indonesia joined on June 4, 2022.
The apostille process eliminates the need for multiple layers of legalization, making it easier and faster for you to use your documents abroad.
Who Issues Apostilles in Indonesia?
In Indonesia, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kementerian Hukum dan Hak Asasi Manusia, i.e. Kemenkumham) is the competent authority responsible for issuing Apostilles.
The ministry verifies that your document was indeed signed or notarized by a recognized entity in Indonesia, and then prints and attaches an Apostille certificate to your document. This makes it so that your document is officially recognized in other Hague Convention member countries.
What Does An Indonesian Apostille Look Like?
The apostille certificate is printed on an official paper by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Below is a sample of what an Indonesian apostille looks like in 2025.
How to Get an Apostille
You have a couple of options when it comes to applying for an apostille.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get an apostille in Indonesia:
Prepare Your Document
Make sure that your document is an original, or a certified copy of the original. To get a certified copy, you can visit your local notary or ask Bali Apostille Service for help.
Translate Your Document (if needed)
Depending on which country you will use your document, you may need to translate it first. Although many Indonesian documents are in English and Indonesian, sometimes they may need to be translated to other languages.
Make sure to find a sworn translator who is recognized by the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, or let Bali Apostille Service help you.
Notarize Your Document (if needed)
Certain documents such as a power of attorney, affidavits, passports, or KTPs, will always require notarization.
Other documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, single-status certificates, divorce certificates, and death certificates may need notarization if they have not been signed electronically, or if the principal who signed them is no longer in office.
Get Additional Legalizations (if needed)
In some cases you may need to get additional legalization for your documents.
For example, the marriage certificate for Muslim couples (Buku Nikah) will need to be legalized at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) before it can be apostilled.
For example, a divorce certificate will need to be legalized at the Supreme Court of Indonesia (Mahkamah Agung) before it can be apostilled.

Wait For Completion
Wait for the ministry to finish the verification process and then issue your apostille. This normally takes 5 – 10 business days.
Visit The Nearest Kemenkumham Office to Receive Your Apostille
Once the apostille is complete, you can visit the nearest Kemenkumham office to print your apostille. Don’t forget to take your Passport or KTP identification with you!
