What is a Marriage Book (Buku Nikah)?
A Buku Nikah is the official marriage certificate issued by the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) in Indonesia for Muslim marriages. It comes in two separate books—one for the husband and one for the wife—and contains essential information about your marriage, such as the date, location, and identities of both spouses. This document is legally recognized within Indonesia, and apostilling it makes it valid for use abroad.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apostille your marriage book in Indonesia.
Step 1: Legalization at your local Office of Religious Affairs (KUA)
Before you can proceed with the apostille, you must first legalize your marriage book at the local Kantor Urusan Agama (KUA) where your marriage was registered. This step confirms that the document is official and valid.
Visit your local KUA office with your original marriage book (Buku Nikah).
Bring your and your spouse’s KTPs and/or passports.
Ask the KUA officer to create five (5) copies of your Buku Nikah. You should mention that it will be used to obtain an apostille certificate. Make sure to ask them to apply a wet stamp to each copy.
The KUA will verify your Buku Nikah and stamp the five (5) copies, making them true copies of your Buku Nikah.
Step 2: Legalization at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) in Jakarta
After obtaining legalization from the KUA, the next step is to get your marriage book legalized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Agama) in Jakarta. This step ensures that your Buku Nikah is officially recognized at the national level.
You may visit the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Jakarta or reach out to Bali Apostille Service to do it on your behalf.
Make sure to take the following documents with you:
Your and your spouse’s KTPs and/or passports.
Certificate of No Impediment (CNI), which was needed to get married in Indonesia.
The five (5) legalized copies of the Buku Nikah.

Step 3: Apostille at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham)
Once your marriage book has been legalized by The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), you can proceed with the apostille process at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kementerian Hukum dan HAM). This apostille certifies that your document is valid for international use without needing any further consular legalization.
You have two options for applying for an apostille:
Create an account and go through the application process.
You can follow the instructions from the ministry’s website here.
Wait for the ministry to finish the verification process and then issue your apostille. This normally takes 5–7 business days.
Once the apostille is complete, you can visit the nearest Kemenkumham office to print your apostille. Don’t forget to take your Passport or KTP identification with you!
